For any F.Marinos fan making the trip to Japan (or even just to Yokohama!) your experience wouldn’t be complete without a morning at Marinos Town!
Just a 20 minute walk from Yokohama station, Marinos Town is the best place to get a glimpse of the players close-up and is one of the finest fully-dedicated training facilities in the country. The idea for Marinos Town was born out of the clubs growing necessity to enhance the ‘Smooth running of the club’ due to the fact that at the time, The players were training in Totsuka and Yokosuka whilst the clubs Administration departments were located in Shin-koyasu. With the construction of Marinos Town, the club and players are now brought together on a daily basis in just one location.
Built a stone’s throw from Yokohama Port (and very windy as a result!), the complex includes a huge state-of-the-art clubhouse, a combination of artificial and grass pitches to train on and even several futsal pitches that can be hired by the public. The clubhouse also serves as home to the 3 league championships won by the club since the inception of the J-League in the early nineties.
Unlike most training grounds across Europe and around the world, fans are actively encouraged to attend training sessions and a 2000+ seated stand has been built to facilitate their watching. Training normally starts at around 10am and usually lasts until midday. Don’t worry about the wind too much though; there’s a combini in the complex that sells warm coffee!
Not only can you take in training from the stands, but it’s also not uncommon for F.Marinos to play reserve or youth team matches at Marinos Town which, again, fans are welcome to attend. Matches normally take place at the beginning or end of each season, and can often see an F.Marinos select take on challengers from a local university.
On a Tuesday and Wednesday, players will often stick around to meet the fans who show up, and are generally happy to sign shirts, pictures and other memorabilia you may bring. This doesn’t take place every week however, and is dependent on whether or not there is a midweek game taking place, so be sure to drop us a line either through our Facebook or on twitter (@TricolorePride), and we’ll try our best to find out if you’ll be able to meet your favourite F.Marinos players on the day you attend. If you play your cards right, maybe you’ll get to meet Dutra too!
Boasting one of the two club stores, which are known as TricoloreOne, Marinos Town is the place to go if you’d like to pick up a jersey, a lunch box or even a fetching Marinosuke cap, which we absolutely guarantee will improve your chances of meeting ‘the one’.
Although Marinos Town is a great place to visit and is definitely recommended, it’s roots aren’t so positive. Largely due to the cost of building Marinos Town, several key-players from the great F.Marinos title-winning side of 2003 & 2004 were let go in order to pay for the project, much to the dismay of the fans. Favourites such as Dutra and Daisuke Oku were let go and, whilst Dutra would return later in his career, many fans believe the club failed to truly build upon the successes of the mid-noughties.
