Naoki Matsuda in “critical” condition.

This is certainly not a post we ever wanted to write but as most of you may have heard, former F.Marinos player and legend, Naoki Matsuda, is currently in critical condition after suddenly collapsing and suffering a cardio-respiratory arrest during a training session yesterday morning at his current club, Matsumoto Yamaga (JFL).

News is still a little scarce but what we do know is that he collapsed about 35mins into his training session after doing some light jogging. Clubs medics quickly rushed to his aid and administered emergency resuscitation and heart massages but it wasn’t enough to revive him before the ambulance arrived. Medics have said that they believe its likely that he went into full cardio pulmonary arrest shortly after reaching the hospital due to him not responding from the heart massages.

As of now, Naoki is currently on life support and from what we can gather, his heart is now beating regularly thanks to the artificial respiration machines he on. What is unclear however, is how long he went without oxygen before the paramedics showed up which means there could be a possibility of him suffering from brain damage should he have been starved of air for too long. Doctors have described his condition as “critical” and have mentioned that he has yet to regain consciousness.
Naoki’s long-term footballing comrade and close friend, Shunsuke Nakamura, departed immediately to the hospital in Nagano upon hearing the news. Arriving at the intensive care unit at 10pm last night with former Yokohama player, Shoji Jo, Shunsuke looked sullenly without uttering a word as he silently viewed Naoki through the viewing window. Upon leaving the hospital, Shunsuke simply said “I believe that he will recover from this” before getting back into the private-hire car he came in.

As of typing this, there has been no further updates regarding Naoki’s condition but rest assured we are following his status very closely and you will all know any new news regarding his condition as soon we do. In the meantime, all we can do is offer our prayers to him and his family who must be going through an unimaginably tough time.

It leaves you a bit sick in the stomach watching this, doesnt it?

Keep fighting Naoki. Thoughts are with you and your family and friends. It will be a tough fight, but there is no better man to be battling the most difficult circumstances.

This is just so terrible. I watched the doco about him leaving Yokohama and finding a contract with Yamaga Matsumoto, and his speech at Nissan last year, it was too sad. A club legend. I truly hope he will recover completely. My thoughts go out to his family, friends and those supporters who have loved him through his time with the Marinos.

Yeah… I’m having quite a hard time dealing with this to be honest. My wife and I chanted together for 2 hours last night (We’re Buddhist) in the hope that our earnest prayers would reach him.

It’s quite simply a tragedy. Naoki is natural born fighter and has always been known for his stubbornness whenever he puts his mind to something so I’m sure that if he’s determined to turn the tables back round, he will do just that.

Hang in there old friend, we’re ALL here for you….

I’m taken aback by this news, it’s almost impossible to believe that this sort of thing can happen in the modern game when professional footballers are such athletes. My thoughts are with him and his family, GET WELL SOON!

I really couldn’t believe this news when my Fiance told me yesterday. It’s truly sad news. To know that Naoki is of the old school and playong merely due to the love of the game and not just a pay cheque made me a fan of him. After seeing his farewell last seeing this further instilled my admiration in him. I hope that his family are surrounded by strength and that all of our prayers are answered and he makes a recovery.

    Forever Young. Mr. Marinos R.I.P.
